Mirei Yamagata

Mirei Yamagata was born in Hong Kong and raised in the United States, Germany, and Japan. After working in Minneapolis, USA, she returned to Japan in 2003. She is currently active as a bilingual English-Japanese narrator, voice actor, performer, and writer. Since 2014, she has been a regular on the NHK E-Tele program Purekiso English, voicing the character Shrimp in Sushitown. She also voices Nyakkii in the English version of Benesse's Shimajiro no WAO. In 2016, she served as the scriptwriter for NHK Radio's Basic English 1. In the performing arts, she studied Butoh and improvisation under Toru Iwashita of Dairakudakan, and has performed dance works in Tokyo, Warsaw, Taiwan, South Korea, and China since 2007. She also produced and directed the Taiwan-Japan International Joint Project: Yasunari Kawabata Trilogy, which was performed in Taipei, Tokyo, and Shanghai. Additionally, she is an active translator and interpreter with 13 years of experience in English instruction. Her grammar, listening, speaking, and writing skills—in both English and Japanese—are at a native level.
